Baie-Trinité, Quebec — March 16, 2026 — AquaBoreal is taking a new step in the development of its land-based aquaculture project on the North Shore of Quebec. After completing several major steps, the company is now entering the detailed engineering phase.
To support this step, AquaBoreal is entering into a collaboration agreement with GlobaQ, a Danish firm known for its expertise in the design and supply of land-based salmon farming facilities using RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture Systems) technology. The company has extensive global experience, spanning the entire production cycle from egg to commercial harvest.
The ability of GlobaQ to interpret and translate a complex and unconventional production model into concrete engineering solutions was a determining factor in its selection as a partner for the project’s detailed engineering.
AquaBoreal will also continue its collaboration with Quebec firms, including CIMA+, which has been contributing to the project’s development for more than two years. The development team has also been strengthened with the arrival of Frare & Gallant, a Quebec company specializing in the construction management of clean industrial projects, with more than 45 years of experience in Quebec and Canada.
“The completion of these steps confirms that the project is entering a decisive phase where we must continue to work with the world’s best companies. We’re very pleased with the progress made so far and grateful for the support received from both the Government of Canada and the Gouvernement du Québec. We’re convinced that high-performance aquaculture can be developed right here on the North Shore,” said Léopold Landry, president and co-founder of AquaBoreal.
Eduardo Kipreos, co-founder and chairman of Altamar Group in Chile, also welcomed the progress made.
“After nearly four years of work to bring AquaBoreal to life, this new step brings us closer to the full realization of the project. Our group has always been dedicated to aquaculture, it’s our core competency. Today, we operate in several Latin American countries, including Chile where we’re leaders in salmon processing. In Peru and Argentina, we’re successfully running farming operations producing antibiotic-free Steelhead trout under the Mar Andino brand.”
For his part, Manuel Godoy, CTO and co-founder of AquaBoreal, pointed out that this step represents the culmination of several years of RAS design development.
“AquaBoreal has developed a distinctive production model that doesn’t simply reproduce existing RAS approaches, but rather aims to rethink them. This unique model stems from the expertise and hands-on experience of some of the most seasoned and innovative RAS professionals in the industry. It focuses on biological performance, rigorous water quality management, energy efficiency and biosafety, all integrated into a coherent, scalable and high-performance design.”
About AquaBoreal
AquaBoreal is a Quebec company developing a next-generation land-based aquaculture project focused on innovation, environmental performance and social responsibility.
Located in Baie-Trinité, the company will produce salmon raised without antibiotics thanks to very high quality seawater drawn from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, a natural environment for wild Atlantic salmon.
The first phase of the project provides for an annual production capacity of 10,000 tonnes of salmon, primarily intended for the Quebec and Canadian markets, thereby helping to strengthen Quebec’s food self-sufficiency and reduce Canada’s dependence on imports of fish.
Consistent with the 2023–2028 Northern Action Plan of the Gouvernement du Québec, the project aims to become a driver of sustainable economic development for the North Shore, generating long-term regional benefits and quality jobs, which will complement the development achieved by the salmon industry in Canada over the past decades.
